Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 (FARMERS BRANCH, Texas) – Having the knowledge and skillsets to make informed decisions about the use and management of money is essential to one’s overall financial health. Unfortunately, studies have shown that many consumers lack the very basic skills, including how to balance a checkbook, manage credit responsibly, and what factors contribute to their credit score.
Recognizing how widespread the lack of financial knowledge has become, many states have mandated that high school students complete a stand-alone course in personal finance. Others have directed school districts to include personal finance in the curriculum of other courses, such as economics.
At the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation’s Feb. 6-7 FOCUS Summit, Laura Ewing, executive director with the Texas Council on Economic Education, will present a financial education legislation update. As a classroom teacher, Ewing taught for 24 years with most of her experience in teaching economics and government curriculum. She understands how important it is for young people to learn money management skills, and is knowledgeable of the role public policy plays in financial education.
In addition to Ewing’s financial education legislative update, the Feb. 6-7 FOCUS Summit features:
A Keynote address from Jean Chatzky, an acclaimed author and financial editor for NBC’s “Today” show. Chatzky will offer a frank discussion about money, including how to get it, how to keep it, how to invest it, and how to make peace with it.
