Pineywoods Chapter Makes Advocacy a Priority

The Pineywoods Chapter of Credit Unions has made advocacy a major focus of their activities, and they're getting results.

Last year, the chapter exceeded their fundraising goals by more than 200 percent. In addition, they are proactively encouraging local credit unions to take action when a critical legislative or regulatory call is issued.

“Our chapter understands the essential role that advocacy plays in our daily lives as credit union professionals,” said Jonathan Matthews, CEO of Southland FCU and Pineywoods Chapter President. “Chapter meetings are a great forum for bringing credit unions together to talk about key advocacy issues and build relationships with lawmakers.”

The chapter recently hosted two local lawmakers, State Rep. Travis Clardy (TX-11) and State Rep. Trent Ashby (TX-57), to discuss economic issues affecting East Texas.

Matthews added, “Our chapter board wants to continue to offer more advocacy and community outreach-themed programs. It’s an effective way to enhance the profile of credit unions in our community.”
