People's Trust FCU Earns Juntos Avanzamos Designation
Monday, July 14, 2014 7:00 AM

People’s Trust FCU in Houston, Texas has become the 28th credit union to earn the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Juntos Avanzamos designation. Juntos Avanzamos means “Together We Advance,” and this designation is awarded by Cornerstone to credit unions in the region that have successfully completed a rigorous application process that confirms they have the capacity, commitment, and compassion to serve the financial needs of Hispanic families.

“Approximately 40 percent of the Houston population is Hispanic, and if you go into any primarily Hispanic neighborhood, there are pawn shops and check cashing stores on just about every corner,” observes People’s Trust FCU CEO Angela McCathran. “Unfortunately, these places charge exorbitant fees and do not help build credit in any way. Living out the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’, we have an obligation to not only help people save money, but to provide financial literacy and help them gain access to financial services such as checking accounts, loans, and credit cards – things that most people take for granted.”

The $465 million in assets credit union has five branches, serving those who live, work, worship or attend school in Houston. Of its 89 employees, 38 are Hispanic and 26 are bilingual. Over the past year, McCathran says they have worked extremely hard to earn the Juntos Avanzamos designation.

“Being able to fly the Juntos Avanzamos flag will show not only our members, but the general population, just how committed we are to serving the Hispanic community.”

As a Together We Advance credit union, People’s Trust FCU offers top-quality services to Hispanic members. The credit union has developed a comprehensive marketing plan to reach its growing Hispanic market, and currently offers, among other products and services:

  • Bilingual services
  • Member service documents in Spanish, including the membership application, the direct deposit form, funds availability disclosure, privacy disclosure, and others
  • Credit-building loans
  • ATM services in Spanish
  • 24-hour automated service line in Spanish
  • Financial education
  • Signage and marketing materials in both English and Spanish

The credit union has also established key partnerships within the community to be more effective in its outreach efforts. Cornerstone is working with the credit union to schedule a Juntos Avanzamos flag raising ceremony. Details will be shared when the information becomes available.
