With scholarships in hand, paying for college tuition just became a little easier for 17 high school seniors from three different high schools within Border FCU’s field of membership. Thanks to sponsors, golfers and volunteers at the Del Rio, Texas-based credit union’s second annual “Dollars for Scholars” golf tournament, the credit union was able to award $11,000 in scholarships.

“With a daughter who just graduated from college; a son is in law school, and another college-bound daughter who will start her junior year of high school in August, I understand the financial burden paying for college can have on families,” says Border FCU CEO Maria Martinez. “Every little bit helps, and Border FCU wants to do its part to help make college more affordable for families in our community.”

To be eligible for the Border FCU Scholarship, students must:

  • Have a primary membership account at Border FCU
  • Be a member in good standing with BFCU
  • Be a graduating high school senior, or a freshman or sophomore at an accredited college
  • Have a grade point average of 2.5 or above
  • Be registered at an accredited college/university for the fall term of the following school year

Eligible applications were evaluated, and scholarship award was determined based grade point average, difficulty of courses completed, community involvement, school involvement, and leadership positions.
