One Source FCU Spreads Christmas Cheer to Local Elementary

One Source FCU at Beal Elementary

For the past 13 years, One Source Federal Credit Union employees have played Secret Santa to the entire kindergarten class at Beal Elementary school in El Paso, Texas. This year, on Dec. 20, 54 students got to enjoy some fun and Christmas cheer.

Visiting the school has been an annual tradition, and One Source employees greatly look forward to it. The credit union chose this school for their Secret Santa program when their name was El Paso Bell FCU, and it seemed apropos because of the similarity of names and the proximity of Beall Elementary.

"We chose the kindergarten class because they are all so full of Christmas spirit that it’s contagious among our entire staff," said Marketing Director Melissa Gutierrez. "You would think that they would want the most popular and expensive toy, but no, some of them want shoes, clothes, and just one toy. The smile on their faces is priceless."

Gutierrez recalls that a few years back, one little boy didn't want to open his gift. When was asked why, he said that present was the only one he was going to get for Christmas, and he wanted to save it until Christmas morning to have something to open.

"That's why we do what we do every single year," Gutierrez said. "This school is in one of the lowest income areas in our city, and some of the kids don’t get presents for Christmas because their parents just can’t afford it."

"One Source has been committed to helping the kids at Beall Elementary for 14 years," said One Source FCU's CEO Bob Peterson. "We believe this tradition is important to those children, to the school, and to One Source. It demonstrates not just a commitment to them, but also to the community that we serve. Many of these children expect no other gifts in the season, so their appreciation is genuine and very evident. This is a great example of how credit unions can serve our communities in myriad ways. Besides the benefit to the kids, our employees truly love doing this year after year.”
