Oklahoma Educators CU Offers Grants to Teachers
Monday, October 6, 2014 7:00 AM

Each July, Oklahoma Educators Credit Union accepts grant applications from Oklahoma teachers who are OECU members. In 2014, more than 100 applications were received and reviewed by its Grants Committee, and 64 grants were awarded.

Two of the grant recipients were Amy LaRue and Erica Gray, both kindergarten teachers at Will Rogers Elementary in Edmond.

LaRue plans on purchasing a variety of block items that can be used to enhance the learning and exploration in her classroom's block center. "A block center is important to a young child's growth both academically and socially," LaRue said. "Through the use of a block center students will be exploring math concepts such as geometric understanding, sorting, comparing and contrasting."

Gray will apply her grant funds toward purchasing materials to enhance her student's phonics and alphabet mastery. "I plan on using the material in small groups of students," Gray said. "During these small groups, I would be able to reach students on a more individual basis. I have seen the amazing impact that small group intervention can have on students and the growth they can make as a result of it."

The credit union grants were awarded in September at OECU's Teacher Grant Banquet on the Reno campus of Francis Tuttle Technology Center in Oklahoma City.

"Oklahoma Educators Credit Union supports educators and their efforts to bring imaginative and innovative learning projects to their classrooms," said Cindy White, OECU president. "That's why we began our Teacher Grant Program; it's our way to help Oklahoma teachers bring about new projects to life."
