Oklahoma Credit Union Vault Credited with Saving Lives of Staff, Members
Friday, May 24, 2013 6:25 AM

Nearly all financial institutions have safe-deposit boxes and vaults for safe-keeping of their members’ money and valuables, but last Monday, one credit union’s vault safe-guarded the most precious of assets – people.

As reported by Credit Union Times and CNN, the giant, concrete-encased vault at Tinker Federal Credit Union (TFCU) in Moore, Okla. protected the lives of 14 credit union employees and eight of their members as an EF-5 tornado tore the rest of the credit union branch and its parking lot to shreds.

After the tornado passed, first responders reacted quickly to help those inside the vault exit safely. As other employees and staff made their way home, the branch manager stayed to lock up and protect the valuables still inside the vault.

The aftermath of the Oklahoma tornadoes continues to be a very real concern for the people of Oklahoma. Twenty-six TCUF employees reported damage to their homes, and many others are still in desperate need of help.

The Texas Credit Union Foundation (TCUF) is working directly with the Oklahoma Credit Union Foundation to ensure an appropriate response and partnership, assisting member credit union employees during this time of need. To learn more, please visit
