Stop the Data Breaches

During October, Cornerstone will observe National Cyber Security Awareness month to draw attention to the many ways a stable, safe, and resilient cyberspace affects our daily life and economic vitality in the public and private sectors, especially credit unions.

Our cybersecurity professionals will look at the current cyber threats and offer tips and best practices concerning how to stay safe online. You'll find the conversation here in the Leaguer, on our Credit Union Resources blog here, and on our social media sites, Facebook and Twitter, and LinkedIn.

As you know, Equifax systems were struck by a cybersecurity breach that affected 143 million U.S. consumers, one of the largest in history. The breach made vulnerable consumers' Social Security numbers, birth dates and home addresses, plus some driver's license numbers. Hackers are said to have obtained 209,000 consumers' credit card numbers and credit dispute documents for as many as 182,000 others. Equifax has alleged that the breach was discovered July 29, and they have now contained it.

We want to remind you about the Stop the Data Breaches campaign site, where you can learn more about how we can work to prevent future data breaches and press members of our congressional delegations for a legislative solution. Consumers must have the ability to know if they have been compromised and have the tools to protect themselves.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month is observed each October since its inception in 2004 in the U.S. Cyber Security Awareness Month encourages vigilance and protection by all computer users.
