Nussle Op-Ed Reminds CUs to Use August for Advocacy
Wednesday, August 5, 2015 6:30 AM

While members of Congress won’t be around Washington, DC, much during the annual August recess, Credit Union National Association President andCEO Jim Nussle told credit union stakeholders Monday that advocacy doesn’t take a month off.

In an op-ed appearing in CU Insight, Nussle encouraged the credit union system to stay engaged with lawmakers and take time to point out the credit union difference in their home districts.

“Five hundred and thirty-five members of Congress are opening up their district offices, holding town hall meetings and other events for constituents,” Nussle wrote. “Here’s a chance to meet with them face to face at home. I hope you’ll invite these elected representatives of ours to visit your credit union, meet your employees and see the credit union difference come to life through people helping people.”

Nussle noted that during his time in Congress (representing Iowa’s 2nd District from 1991 to 2003 and Iowa’s 1st District from 2003 to 2007), hearing from his constituents at home helped him better represent them upon returning to Capitol Hill.

“Engaging in advocacy is telling your story, and I encourage you to help them understand that what you do every single day is making a difference in the lives of your members,” he said. “This is part of our 360-degree approach to advocacy; an approach to engage everyone, everywhere through grassroots, Hike the Hills, and everything in between.”
