Wednesday, June 17, 2015 6:35 AM

The June 12 Nilson Report says the U.S. ACH networks processed over $40 trillion in transactions during 2014. The consumer-related portion of those transactions reached $13.3 trillion. Over $8.1 trillion dollars were direct-deposits into consumer accounts in 2014, and they paid over $4.5 trillion in bills electronically.

Nilson also reported that consumers used their credit and debit cards to make nearly 196 billion purchases last year. Visa was the most popular card, accounting for 72 billion purchases or 36.8 percent of the market total in 2014. MasterCard was a distant second with 52 billion purchases, accounting for 26.3 percent of the market total.

Consumers are projected to make 362 billion purchases using cards by 2019.
