FAA Credit Union in Oklahoma City has become the first Oklahoma credit union to earn the Juntos Avanzamos (Together We Advance) designation, and they celebrated the milestone at a special flag-raising ceremony on Friday, September 19.

The Juntos Avanzamos initiative recognizes member credit unions that are committed to serving the Hispanic market with financial services, while providing financial education and empowerment that will ensure more stable financial futures. Cornerstone Credit Union League presented FAA Credit Union with the "Together We Advance" flag and a proclamation honoring the credit union with this designation.

FAA Credit Union and the branch's bilingual and bicultural staff have been deeply committed to the Hispanic populations it serves for more than eight years. As a result of serving this market, FAA Credit Union has loaned out approximately $30 million for cars, homes, and family necessities, and has $26.9 million in deposits.

Steve Rasmussen, president and CEO of FAA Credit Union welcomed a diverse crowd to the Capitol Hill branch ceremony, where the credit union serves more than 6,000 members. Said Rasmussen, "We are honored to serve the Hispanic community here in Oklahoma City, and we are solidifying that commitment even more."

Board chairman Judy Richey said she knew it was about more than just opening up a branch eight years ago. "It was about hiring and training bilingual staff, adjusting policies, translating materials, and—most of all—building the trust of the community. We were willing to make these changes because we wanted to make a difference, and we have."

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the FAA Credit Union board and associate directors; Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President David Castillo; Latino Community Development Executive Director Ruben Aragon; Telemundo Television General Manager Armando Rubio; and Cornerstone International Relations Committee Chairman Robert Peterson and CEO Dick Ensweiler, as well as the majority of Cornerstone's board of directors and senior staff.

Rasmussen said he was delighted by the support they received for their flag-raising ceremony on Friday. "We had great representation from the community at large, as well as the credit union family," he said. "The work we've put in for the last eight years has really paid off, and we feel like we are now a trusted resource. In the spirit of the credit union philosophy, this success has come by working with area partners who feel the same passion we do. It is an honor and a privilege to do what we do every day."

Because of the success of the Capitol Hill branch, the facility is expanding. A ribbon cutting took place as part of the Juntos Avanzamos ceremony to introduce the new addition, which should be completed by next summer.

Some of FAA Credit Union's members were present, and they shared their story publicly about what membership in the credit union has meant to them.

"Our job is to help these families realize dreams they never thought were possible," said Daniel Garcia, Capitol Hill branch manager. "Every day, we feel lucky to be able to do what we do. The staff at this branch does an amazing job for these members."
