New Research Shows 90 Percent of Financial Institutions Report Mobile Deposit Benefits Outweigh Risks and Costs

According to recent survey by, 90 percent of financial institutions that offer mobile remote deposit capture say the benefits far outweigh the risks. Additionally, 95 percent of survey respondents indicated that losses associate with mobile remote deposit was at or below established risk thresholds.

Nearly 250 financial institutions participated in the study, ranging from credit unions and community banks to the largest financial institutions. Key findings include:

  • The majority of respondents (63 percent) either offer mobile remote deposit capture, or plan to (33 percent) within 12 months.
  • While 95 percent of financial institutions who are live with mobile remote deposit capture offer it to their retail clients, only 37 percent offer it to their corporate clients.
  • Of those who currently offer mobile remote deposit capture to at least one segment, 62 percent plan to expand to additional segments such as small businesses and corporations.
  • Eighty percent of financial institutions using mobile RDC reported no losses.
  • Sixty-one percent of financial institutions reported that they use a customized approach for setting limits to minimize risk.
  • With respect to funds availability, 28 percent of respondents provided same-day or immediate funds; 51 percent offer next-day and 16 percent have a two-day policy.
