New Audio Conference: Account and Service Restrictions Following Navy FCU Consent Order

In an October 2016 Consent Order, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau alleged that Navy Federal Credit Union’s account and service restrictions were unfair due to the lack of disclosure to members. As a result, credit unions throughout the country have been reviewing their current account and service restrictions, as well as the adequacy of notice provided to members.

Many credit unions have a Denial of Service Policy or Member in Good Standing Policy that is enforced if a member is delinquent on a loan, causes a loss to the credit union or, for example, is abusive to staff. Join us for a new audio conference to analyze the heightened risks related to account and service restrictions and outline best practices for credit unions to follow in order confirm, update, and disclose their policies and practices.

Steven Van BeekYour presenter is Steve Van Beek, an attorney at Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC, where his practice concentrates on financial regulations. He has intimate knowledge of the operational issues facing credit unions and the best practices they can follow to reduce compliance, strategic, and reputation risks. Prior to joining Howard & Howard, he served as the vice president of regulatory compliance at the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). He received his Bachelor’s from Hope College and his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law, and he is a member of the American Bar Association.
