National Action Alert! Show Your Support of Data Breach Legislation
Tuesday, May 5, 2015 6:35 AM

CUNA and Cornerstone are again calling for all credit unions to contact their U.S. representatives in support of H.R. 2205, the Data Security Act of 2015, which is the companion bill to Senate S.961, introduced in April. We must take advantage of this momentum we've attained through much hard work and grassroots advocacy, and increase the pressure on Congress to approve this legislation.

H.R. 2205, sponsored by Reps. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) and John Carney (D-DE) strengthens merchant standards to be comparable with those of credit unions and mandates a federal notification requirement for merchants when breaches occur.

Additionally, H.R. 2205 provides a floor for data security standards nationwide and includes the important provision to exclude financial institutions from the requirements, as they are already subject to rigorous standards under the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA). H.R. 2205, like S. 961, represents the best attempt so far at legislation to stop merchant data breaches.

“CUNA’s Stop the Breaches website makes it easy for credit unions to take action on this key alert,” said Jim Phelps, Cornerstone SVP of Advocacy. “In addition to credit union professionals and volunteers taking action, I encourage credit unions to share this alert with membership to help increase momentum for the data security bills.”

How You Can Take Action

We are now activating all credit unions in an urgent campaign to deliver the strong message to Congress: “Stop the Data Breaches.” Here's how you can take action and be part of this nationwide effort:

  1. Visit www.stopthedatabreaches.com to contact your members of Congress, and click on the “Take Action” link.
  2. Sign up for the Member Activation Program. We have already provided a template to our MAP credit unions and have updated text to reflect this new bill.
  3. Make use of the various tools and resources in CUNA’s Credit Union Data Breach Toolkit to engage and activate your membership.
  4. Engage Congress with your social media and amplify our message on this issue. Our campaign will utilize the Twitter handles @Cornerstone_CUL, @CUNAadvocacy; @CUNA and hashtag #StopTheDataBreaches, as well as the CUNA Advocacy Facebook page, and LinkedIn Company Page.
  5. Continue to stay abreast of new developments by checking the latest news at www.CornerstoneLeague.coop

It’s time to tell the House to support H.R. 2205 and stop the data breaches.
