Mom Applauds CUs for their Support of Children's Miracle Network Credit Unions for Kids Program
Tuesday, April 22, 2014 6:45 AM

A clearly moved and teary-eyed adoptive mother of three applauded credit unions this morning for their support of the Children’s Miracle Network Credit Unions for Kids program. Stephanie Bratton told the audience she is so grateful to credit unions who give so unselfishly to raise money for children like hers.

“God blessed me with my three children, all of whom have special needs. Our story is not so extraordinary. We are just one of many families who are able to receive the medical care we need from hospitals like Santa Rosa because of your support,” she told the credit union audience.

Bratton shared the remarkable story of her youngest child who was born to a homeless young lady. Bratton encountered the young woman while in ER. She believes it was God’s plan that the two crossed paths. She was there for the birth of her adoptive son, and admits to being taken aback when she held the baby for the first time.

“His body was twisted and that made me a little uneasy, but when I picked him up and held him in my arms, I knew he was my son. I brought him home and never looked back.”

Her son has Spina Bifida among other diagnoses, and when she visited Santa Rosa for their very first appointment, Bratton said they never asked about insurance or how she would be paying. They asked only about her son. Today he is able to walk with crutches, and he attends all mainstream classes at school.

“We are just one small picture of the many families you touch with your support of CMN,” she told credit unions. “Your work is bigger than what you may even know. You are touching lives and we thank you for all the work you do, and for letting me share our story.”

America’s credit unions have contributed more than $120 million to CMN hospitals throughout the U.S. since 1996. Nancy Croix-Stroud, president and CEO of First Class American CU and a national advisory board member for CMN, Credit Unions for Kids program, says the partnership between credit unions and CMN Hospitals is giving hope and life to millions of families. In 2013, Croix-Stroud says credit unions raised $10 million for CMN hospitals. Cornerstone credit unions, she told attendees, raised $1.3 million.

“This support helps to ensure that the facilities, equipment and live saving-research are available.”
