Millie Mayaka and Mike Delker
Cornerstone SVP Credit Union Relations Mike Delker presents InTouch Credit Union's Millicent Mayaka with the Compliance Professional of the Year award at the 2017 Compliance and Audit Conference in Fort Worth.

The recipient of the 2017 Compliance Professional of the Year award was presented to Millicent Mayaka, director of quality control at InTouch Credit Union.

The purpose of the Compliance Professional of the Year award is to recognize an outstanding compliance professional’s achievements and contributions to the advancement of compliance in our movement. The award was presented during the Aug. 7-9 Compliance and Audit Conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

Mayaka is a member of the InTouch Credit Union risk management team. Her role is to ensure that the credit union is compliant with all mortgage, home equity, and consumer lending regulations. She joined ITCU in 2007 as a branch manager and progressed toward mortgage compliance.

Chris Carlson, SVP, chief risk officer and legal counsel, has said, "Throughout her credit union career, Millie has consistently demonstrated an engaging interpersonal style, thirst for learning, and a passion for delivering excellent service and results."

Among her myriad educational credentials, Mayaka is a 2013 graduate of the Southwest CUNA Management School and received the school's Award of Excellence. She has been an active member of the Cornerstone Compliance Council and now serves on its executive committee.

Carlson says Mayaka has embraced the opportunity to expand her knowledge and gain greater experience working with executive leaders.

Among her many responsibilities at ITCU, Mayaka counsels and conducts training on mortgage compliance matters. She handles or assists in handling branch reviews, SAFE Act audits, and real estate lending audits. She handles compliance questions of every type, as well as daily BSA, CIP, OFAC, and AML matters; and she is responsible for compliance with TCUD and NCUA requirements for disaster recovery planning and records preservation/retention. Related to this, she leads ITCU’s process for disaster recovery testing and, as an offshoot of this, also information security, IT security, and cybersecurity testing.

Millie Mayaka"While all these things demonstrate a decade of commitment to ITCU and good work by Millie," Carlson says, "what it does not demonstrate is possibly the most impressive thing about her as member of ITCU Risk Management, Cornerstone Compliance Council, and credit union compliance community: her genuine concern and commitment to get things done the right way, in compliance, and with a good attitude. Millie cares; she works hard, is utterly dependable, and is a great person who works well with everyone."

Mayaka has also been actively involved in four credit union mergers. Working with the merger team allowed her the opportunity to share input on various processes and ways they could be effective during implementation.

"The desire for excellence in what I do drives me every day," Mayaka has said. "I take pride in the responsibility and role in the credit union and the opportunities that come my way."

Cornerstone members will soon have the opportunity to see Mayaka speak, as she's included in a dynamic lineup of presenters at the 2017 Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Sept. 7-9. She'll be speaking about business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

Cornerstone Credit Union League extends its sincere congratulations to Millicent Mayaka as the recipient of the 2017 Compliance Professional of the Year award.
