Memorial Service to be Held Feb. 1 for Jim Free

A memorial service for long-time credit union leader Jim Free will be held at the Epiphany Lutheran Church Feb. 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. Free, 73, died Dec. 5. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Heart Association in Free’s name. Condolences to the family may be posted on the Woodlawn Funeral Home and Cemetery’s website. The family requests that those planning to attend the memorial service send an RSVP to, along with their most cherished memory of Free no later than Jan. 20, 2014.

Free graduated from Boonville High School in 1958 and entered The United States Navy. He completed his basic training and was stationed at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Miss. Free completed his tour of duty at the United States Naval Air Station in Kingsville, Texas in 1962.

After completing his military career, Free joined the Kingsville Police Department where he served as a patrolman while completing his BBA from Texas A&I University in 1968. Shortly after moving to Houston, Texas in 1968, Free joined Dresser Industries and became president of Dresser Central CU, which later became Southern Star CU. Free served as the president until his retirement on March 31, 2006.
