MemberSource CU Celebrates Diversity of Staff on ICU Day

MemberSource CU Celebrates Diversity

In addition to all the food, fun, and festivities at this year's International Credit Union Day, the staff at Houston's MemberSource Credit Union was treated to an eye-opening look at the diversity of their fellow co-workers.

Training Director Marsha Needham got things rolling by asking the 65 staff members to select a country they would like to represent. Each staffer received a replica of their selected country's flag to display at their workstations starting Oct. 1, which served as conversation starters among the staff and members about the history of credit unions and connections to the selected countries in the weeks leading up to ICU Day.

ICU Day itself, Oct. 15, kicked off with a flag parade in the lobby, followed later by a potluck lunch that took staff to some of the most intriguing parts of the world, from Guam and the Solomon Islands to Alaska and New Zealand. The employees were allowed to wear a shirt representative of that country with images of flags and/or the country's name. During the potluck, staff played games and dotted a world map with pushpins in all the places they've traveled.

"The conversations built around this event triggered learning, laughter, and love," said Collections Manager Phyllis Brown.

Other employees commented:

“It was a wonderful and fabulous success. What I learned today is that even though we are all from different parts of the world, or should I say globe, we all share something similar, like our native foods, a warm heart, and a beautiful smile. What makes it even more amazing is that we are not only co-workers and friends, we all sat together as one big happy family."

“I enjoyed this so much; please allow me to share the pictures with my family at home in India.”

“Thank you to EVERYONE that participated in this potluck. So grateful to try different types of food and learn so many other great things about each other.”

“I actually learned a lot that I didn’t know about credit unions over the past week leading up to this day."

Needham said, "Our ultimate goal on ICU Day was to raise awareness about the great work that credit unions are doing around the world. We personalized our celebration for the employees to make it meaningful and memorable to them. We had a great day and look forward to building on this success for next year's event."
