Jim Brisendine accepts award for Janey Appia

The 2015 Volunteer of the Year award was presented yesterday at the annual Volunteers Forum to Janey Appia from Resource One Credit Union, a Dallas financial institution with $410 million in assets.

Appia has been a member of the Resource One board of directors since 2007, and serves on the audit committee and as chair of the board development committee. She has been making an enormous impact not only in her community and her credit union, but across America and Canada. She was named “One of the Most Influential Hispanics in Texas” by Texas Hispanic magazine in 1996 and featured in the February 2000 issue of Southern Living magazine in an article titled “A Role Model of Excellence.”

Since 1988, Appia has been a member of LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and has served on the executive board of the LULAC National Education Service Center chairing the resources committee. She was also inducted into the LULAC Women’s Hall of Fame in June 2001; presented with the Exxon/Mobil & LULAC President’s Circle of Excellence Award in June 2003; and in 2006 received the LULAC “Felix Tijerina” Community Service Award presented by LULAC National President Hector Flores.

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Appia graduated in 1974 from SER-Jobs for Progress National, the country's largest community-based provider of alternative education for the Hispanic community. Today, she serves on the board of SER National, and in the past has served on the boards of the Tejas Girl Scouts, Hope Cottage, Hispanic 100, and the 7-Eleven Political Action Committee (SEPAC). She earned her BA in organizational management from Ashford University.

Appia also serves as the consumer and Latino affairs manager for 7-Eleven stores in the U.S. and Canada. Based in Dallas, Texas, 7-Eleven operates, franchises, or licenses more than 10,300 7-Eleven stores in North America. Her credit union, Resource One, implemented the 7-Eleven EAC/Resource One Credit Union Financial Awareness Seminars in 2009, which makes 2015 the 7th year presenting these financial awareness seminars to 7-Eleven employees. She also manages customer relations with a 26-person staff that handles more than 200,000 consumer inquiries per year.
