McWatters Suggests Exam Fairness Solutions
Wednesday, January 20, 2016 6:50 AM

National Credit Union Administration Board Member J. Mark McWatters continued his discussion of improving the examination process in this month’s The NCUA Report.

“The agency should look to create a very transparent non-retaliatory process instead of doubling down to defend the current process,” McWatters wrote. He also suggested additional options for the agency to enhance the examination process, including:

  • Designating a senior executive as an exam outreach officer who will contact credit unions that have just completed an examination to obtain “retaliation-free feedback;”
  • The agency revisiting examiner training and providing a new appeals process resource webpage; and
  • Establishing a credit union advisory council to address regulatory relief and examination issues.

In her column this month, NCUA Chair Debbie Matz said the agency will be “working diligently” to finalize its member business lending and field-of-membership proposals in the first half of this year.

Earlier this month, President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate McWatters to a position on the board of directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
