McWatters Calls for Continued Focus on Extended Exam Cycle
Thursday, March 24, 2016 6:45 AM

NCUA Board Member J. Mark McWatters' was featured in this month's edition of The NCUA Report, authoring a column, "It Is Time to Consider an 18-Month Examination Cycle." In the article, McWatters offers his perspective on the importance of maintaining focus on an extended exam cycle.

McWatters states that NCUA's response was "to dismiss their request outright," while citing, "NCUA has already provided a number of relief measures and the agency needs to give them time to work."

He continues, "In a bipartisan effort, Representatives, Frank Guinta (R-NH) and Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX) have urged NCUA to adopt the longer examination cycle, and many of their House colleagues joined their efforts. This is a positive step, and it brings more attention to this issue. At the same time, Congress should not have to urge the agency to work on fundamental issues, such as the examination cycle."

After outlining his perspective on why the time is now to reconsider the longer exam cycle, McWatters sums up his position: "It is time to begin seriously studying the efficacy of a longer examination cycle to implement not in future years, but this year. It does not make sense for NCUA to delay any longer."
