Two Individuals from Cornerstone Region and One Program to Receive CU’s Highest Honors

The National Credit Union Foundation has announced the winners of the 2017 Herb Wegner Memorial Awards. The Cooperative Trust will be recognized for Outstanding Program, and garnering Outstanding Individual Achievement awards are CO-OP's Stan Hollen and Border FCU's Maria Martinez from the Cornerstone region.

The Herb Wegner Memorial Awards will be presented at a special dinner hosted by the Foundation at the Marriott Marquis on Feb. 27, 2017, in conjunction with the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C. The awards ceremony celebrates the highest national honors in the credit union movement.

Cornerstone extends hearty congratulations to all three recipients of the 2017 Herb Wegner Memorial Award:

  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Maria Martinez, president/CEO of Border Federal Credit Union; and
  • Outstanding Individual Achievement: Stan Hollen, retired president/CEO of CO-OP Financial Services;
  • Outstanding Program: The Cooperative Trust from the Filene Research Institute.

"Maria Martinez’s service to the local credit union community is exceptional," said Cornerstone Credit Union League CEO Dick Ensweiler. "She is amazing in the way she touches so very many people with her zeal and passion. Whether it is the young people in the Del Rio community via financial education camps or scholarships or credit union people through engagement at the league and national arenas, Maria makes a difference every day!"

Martinez is also a frequent speaker at conferences around the country and abroad where she discusses service to the underserved, the challenges and successes of women CEOs, working to form more perfect communities, building and managing your credit score, and more. She has served on many Cornerstone committees, and she chaired the International Relations Committee. She served on the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation board for many years, chairing the grants committee and becoming vice-chairman of the board. She also served on the initial Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Credit Union Advisory Board.

Ensweiler was also thrilled with the news of Stan Hollen's win as a recipient of the Wegner award.

"Stan Hollen is someone I have known for almost 40 years," said Ensweiler. "To see him grow, tackle significant opportunities, and emerge as a visionary in the credit union movement has been a joy. His leadership, especially at CO-OP Financial Services, has benefitted the credit union movement significantly."

Registration for dinner sponsorships and tickets will be available on the Foundation website (ncuf.coop) within the next month.
