A powerful argument from hometown voices carries a lot of weight with legislators, says political analyst Amy Walter. Lawmakers took to the stage on the last day of the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference.

National Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Gigi Hyland thanked attendees for helping raise more than $45,000 to provide BizKid$ to all 116 Washington, D.C., public schools, which have more than 48,000 students.

Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.) received a board resolution from CUNA, thanking him for more than 25 years of support of credit unions. Royce is retiring after this year.

Other lawmakers taking the stage were Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), and Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.)

After the sessions, an “advocacy army” of CUNA GAC credit union attendees descended on Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers from their respective states to communicate legislative priorities and build on already strong relationships with Washington legislators. On the top of their priority list was the easing the regulatory burden for small financial institutions and protecting the credit union tax status.

Wednesday’s Hike followed a week in which GAC attendees heard a slate of speakers that included former President George W. Bush.
