Southwest Lending Conference, May 16-18, 2018, Galveston, Texas

Southwest Lending ConferenceWith the benefits of technology comes the downside of the physical separation of consumers from their financial partners. The question becomes, how do we maintain our identity in the current landscape and reach potential members using the ways and during the times they're accessing the market?

Join us in Galveston, Texas for the Southwest Lending Conference, May 16-18, when financial expert Don Arkell, from CU Lending Advice, answers your questions in his session "Lending Technology: Where We've Been and Where We Are Headed."

Arkell reminds us that banks were formed to serve the wealthy. Credit unions were formed to serve the working class with loans. Does your credit union love to make loans, or does it just love to make loans to members with good credit?

According to the Fair Isaac Corporation, 24 percent of the U.S. population now has a FICO credit score below 600 (i.e., subprime). Members with bad credit need a car to get to work, and even members with bad credit can choose to pay their credit union.

Don ArkellArkell says credit unions must look at their lending channel preferences, the innovation curve in lending, what to expect from their loan origination systems, and using mobile technology to hold on to their pre-approvals at a dealer. In his conference session, Arkell will highlight trends in consumer lending and the challenges facing credit unions in the coming years.

And Arkell has extensive experience to back up his knowledge. In 2007, while working for Red Rocks Credit Union in Highlands Ranch, Colo., Arkell established a vibrant sales culture and transformed the credit union from full retail delivery to offering 100 percent of consumer loans and member service through remote delivery channels. This effort drove down operational expenses while increasing loans, total assets, and net income.

During the difficult economic times of the last decade, Arkell navigated the organization through the muddy waters of the mortgage business by overhauling its entire real estate lending program. He focused on the core values of the organization and completely rebuilt this vital area by implementing a successful consultative lending strategy. He is credited with turning this failing area of the credit union around and growing it into the most profitable area of the credit union.

Arkell's unique leadership style and passion for sales have made him a sought-after speaker, trainer, and strategist. He joined the team at CULendingAdvice in September 2015.
