Independent Candidate Wins Texas House District 120 in Run-Off
Thursday, August 4, 2016 6:55 AM

Laura Thompson, a mediator and former precinct chair, has been elected to fill the unexpired term of former state Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon (D-San Antonio, District 120). Thompson defeated Democrat Lou Miller, a State Farm Insurance agent, by 50 votes in a low-turnout election. Only 1.29 percent of the nearly 95,000 registered voters in the district voted.

Thompson will serve out McClendon's unexpired term until January 2017. At that time, Barbara Gervin Hawkins (D-San Antonio), who ran unopposed for the office in the general election, will begin a new term.

Thompson's win is a rare feat in Texas. Though several candidates have run as an Independent, according to the Legislative Reference Library of Texas, the last time an unaffiliated member served was in 1961.
