John Parsons

Cornerstone has learned that John "Pete" Parsons passed away on Oct. 2. Parsons was a long-time credit union advocate who retired in 1986. He was born in 1928 in Galveston and died peacefully at age 89.

Parsons spent 45 years in financial institutions, first as manager of UTMB Credit Union, then as director of public relations and government relations for the Texas Credit Union League (now the Cornerstone Credit Union League).

In 1974, Parsons was appointed Credit Union Commissioner for the State of Texas. From 1986 through 2001, he was a consultant to credit unions and savings and loan industries, traveling to Jamaica, Kyrgyzstan, Australia, Canada, and Mexico, as well as 44 states within the U.S.

Prior to his life in credit unions, Parsons served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan 1946–1947. He received a Bachelor of Science – Business Administration from St. Edward’s University in Austin in 1951.

The family said Parsons was buried Oct 7 at Calvary Cemetery in Galveston. His daughter Marcia Backes said, "My father was very proud of his involvement in the Credit Union industry and remained in touch with former colleagues for many years after his retirement in 1986."

We at Cornerstone Credit Union League offer our sincerest sympathies. Memorials may be made to the Christian Brothers, Dominican Sisters, Ursuline Sisters, or the charity of your choice.
