Houston’s Energy Capital CU Staff and Board Members Get Reality Check on Retirement
Tuesday, May 7, 2013 6:20 AM

Think your credit union staff members and volunteers know all there is to know about retirement? Think again.

About 30 Energy Capital CU staff and members participated in a Reality Fair recently, focused on retirement.

Whether young or not-so-young, Energy Capital team members learned about how to fit together the financial pieces needed to retire with the resources needed to live comfortably.

It’s never too early to start planning, was the message for younger employees. And older employees and board members learned it’s never too early to reevaluate some decisions on spending and saving if retirement is on the horizon.

“A comfortable retirement doesn’t just happen,” says Texas Credit Union Foundation (TCUF) Executive Director Courtney Moran. “It requires planning ahead to make sure you have the financial resources you need to live the kind of life most everyone seeks.”

Energy Capital CU’s workshop was part of the new Retirement Fair program developed by National Credit Union Foundation’s REAL Solutions, in cooperation with the CUNA Mutual Group.  The Retirement Fair offers participants seven lifestyle booths to provide a reality check on:

  • Housing
  • Food and Clothing
  • Transportation
  • Health and Fitness
  • Leisure, Travel & Entertainment
  • Communication
  • Gifts and Donations

Participants ponder a series of questions about each area to help them understand how much they will likely spend on each. At the end of the fair, participants are then strongly encouraged to get detailed advice from a retirement planner who will help them assess whether they are on track to be able to finance the lifestyle options they chose.
