Houston Chapter's Summer Food Drive Fights Hunger
Thursday, September 18, 2014 6:25 AM

On Monday, Sept. 15, the Houston Chapter of Credit Unions concluded a summer food drive that resulted in a donation of more than 1,629 pounds of food for the Houston Food Bank. They also raised $2,271, mostly from members, for the food bank.

The annual drive included at least 25 Houston credit unions. The effort spanned two months, starting on June 21 and wrapping up at the Houston Chapter of Credit Unions Business Partner Expo on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Teresa Nicolas-Briggs, chairperson for the drive and the community outreach manager for Houston Highway Credit Union, said they used numerous avenues to generate support for the effort. "We sent a number of email blasts to all credit unions in the area, created promotional flyers to hand out at different chapter events, and we placed boxes in credit union lobbies." She added that tellers promoted the drive as well.

“The Houston Food Bank was shocked at the amount of food we donated,” said Teresa Nicolas-Briggs, chairperson for the drive and the community outreach manager for Houston Highway Credit Union. “We are delighted to help in the fight against hunger and excited that this food drive was such a great success.”

The Houston Chapter of Credit Unions provides a collaborative environment for credit union professionals and volunteers to receive education, leadership development, and grow credit union community influence. The Houston Chapter is comprised of over 100 credit unions in the Houston metropolitan area.
