Houston Chapter of Credit Unions Ad Co-op Hopes to Increase Awareness with 'Make Your Move to a CU' Ad Campaign
Wednesday, July 30, 2014 7:00 AM

In its continuing effort to increase awareness and promote the benefits of credit unions, the Houston Chapter of Credit Unions Ad Co-op turned to television. Between June and August the chapter will run a 30-second “Make Your Move to a Credit Union” commercial on two local stations: KRIV Fox 26 and KTXH My 20.

According to Malcolm René, chairman of PR and media for the chapter and chief financial officer and executive vice president of United Community CU, this campaign is not intended to promote a particular product, service or credit union.

“This type of awareness campaign is greatly needed,” René tells the Leaguer. “The reality is, we’re not a big bank with deep pockets, so individually, we just don’t have the resources to run a campaign like this, but when we come together, we can be far more effective in moving the needle toward greater awareness of credit unions.”

The commercial is expected to reach more than 1.3 million people, and the chapter anticipates about 5.7 million impressions by the time the campaign ends in late August.

Credit unions, René says, have great stories to share.

“We might help a member stay in their home after a job loss, or teach a member with their very first checking account how to balance a checkbook,” says René. “But we need to do a better job of telling our stories, and I believe our message carries further when we work together.”

The 30-second spot is available on the chapter’s YouTube account.

On July 9, the chapter held a golf tournament to raise money for the chapter’s advertising co-op, and according to René, they raised $5,500. Eighty people, including players from credit unions within the Houston, Sabine and Gulf Coast chapters participated, as well as business partners. René says it was a huge success. Winners of the golf tournament included:

  • 1st Place – United Community CU
  • 2nd Place – FiStaff
  • 3rd Place – Dolphin Debit
