The Houston Chapter of Credit Unions hosted Credit Union National Association President/CEO Jim Nussle at their June 21 chapter meeting. It was one of the most highly attended chapter meetings in recent memory with more than 150 attendees.

The meeting started with Cornerstone Credit Union League CEO Dick Ensweiler presenting the chapter with the Super Advocate Award for raising $131,876 in net receipts for TCCUL PAC in 2015. The Houston chapter has been a leader in advocacy, raising records funds for the TCCUL PAC and CULAC, volunteering in local campaigns, and participating in key legislative and regulatory alerts. The chapter also mobilized volunteers for credit union-friendly candidates in several competitive primary races.

Nussle’s remarks focused on five key points:

  1. Leading interdependent and fierce 360-degree advocacy to remove barriers;
  2. Promoting better awareness of the credit union difference;
  3. Establishing credit union relevance and providing solutions for a disruptive financial service market;
  4. Delivering an interdependent CUNA/Cornerstone value proposition; and
  5. Increasing credit union market share; “Growing is Winning.”

Following his remarks, Nussle took questions from the audience on topics such as the fall elections, CUNA’s strategy to mitigate regulatory burdens from the CFPB and other agencies, and the prospects of credit union legislation moving in Congress.

Chapter President Craig Atkinson said, “The Houston Chapter of Credit Unions was honored and pleased that Mr. Nussle would take time out of his busy schedule to visit Houston and explain the strategic vision of collaboration between CUNA, Leagues and Credit Unions. The attendees enjoyed his presentation and found his insight valuable in light of optionality."
