Houston CUs Meet with Rep. Wayne Smith

Rep. Wayne Smith recently met with credit union leaders at Community Resource Credit Union in Baytown, Texas. Smith is chairman of the powerful House Committee on Licensing & Administrative Procedures in the Texas Legislature.

The chairman talked about the work his committee did this year on regulatory issues, including work he did on legislation regulating non-consent towing of vehicles and the fees that vehicle storage facilities charge the public and lienholders to recover the vehicle. He worked with local credit unions, the Texas Credit Union Association, and the author of the bill to address the problems created by the legislation. The bill would have increased the possibility that a vehicle would be sold by the vehicle storage facility before the owner or lienholder could recover it, causing the borrower and lienholder to lose money. The issues with the bill could not be resolved, and the bill did not pass.

Rep. Smith's district has close to 82,000 credit union members. First elected to the Texas House in 2003, he has served seven terms in the Legislature. He will be seeking re-election and faces two opponents in the March 1 Republican primary.
