Happiness and Success is Your Responsibility, Motivational Speaker Joel Zeff Tells a CU Audience Today
Thursday, September 5, 2013 6:50 AM

Life is about choices and our happiness and success is our own responsibility and no one else’s – that is a message motivational speaker Joel Zeff delivered to a credit union audience this morning at the Cornerstone Credit Union League’s Leadership Conference & Expo in San Antonio. Through improvisation games and audience participation, Zeff entertained and enlightened the audience during his opening presentation.

As leaders, Zeff told the crowd, you have the responsibility to create the foundation and the opportunity for success, but it’s up to each individual on the team to make something of it.

“Your happiness and success is up to you,” he reiterated time and again.

And while we may all want to be leaders, innovators, mentors, etc., we can’t expect it to just be handed to us – we have to work for it. Sometimes achieving happiness and success can be difficult, and according to Zeff, the key is to stay in the game.

“Finding happiness and success may require us to step outside of our comfort zone, and to try new things,” Zeff said. “That can be uncomfortable for some people. Change can be scary and difficult, but it’s necessary.”

Even if you make a mistake, or if things don’t unfold the way you want them to, Zeff says you’ve got to stay in the game.

“We’re going to make mistakes, it’s unavoidable. The key is to learn from those mistakes and not give up,” he encouraged. “If you quit, you fail.”

To be more receptive to change, Zeff says, we need to be prepared for it.

“Change happens every single day,” he said. “We need to listen and pay attention. If we’re open and flexible, change won’t be so scary.”

Zeff challenged the audience to ask themselves one question every day, “how can I help people be more successful.”

“The ‘what’s in for me’ mentality doesn’t work,” Zeff says. “Every championship team has a common goal and they all work together to get there.”

He also encouraged the credit union audience to have fun and celebrate those “Ta-da” moments.

“When we’re children, we can’t wait to share our ‘Ta-da’ moments, but as we get older we stop doing that,” he said. “We need to bring ‘Ta-da’ back into the workplace.”

Zeff encouraged attendees to take the time to show their appreciation to those who deserve it.

“Celebrate successes. Be present and in the moment with your members, colleagues, partners and vendors,” he said.

The League’s Leadership Conference & Expo runs through Saturday.
