Happier Together

Steve Stovall, AVP, Credit Union Resources

We spend a lot of time at work. When you factor in travel time and the actual hours in the office, most of us spend more time awake at work than we do at home. If your employees are at work so much, why not make it as enjoyable as possible? Here are several things that I've seen over time that keep people happy at work.

We all have to eat, and food is a good motivator at work. I know one credit union CEO who says that a tray of chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A is like putting a tray of gold in the employee break room around lunch time. It's an unexpected treat that makes his employees happy. Around here, our FUN Committee is always doing things to keep our bellies full. One of my favorite activities is ice cream day. Sometimes, it's a build-your-own-sundae bar (which is greatness), while other times it's individually packaged frozen treats. Either way, YUM!

Recently, a very popular change was made to our dress code. Jeans have been added to our business casual acceptable clothes policy. Cost to the company? Zero. Morale of the employees? 100 percent. Now, it's up to us to "Dress for our Day." We are empowered to make decisions based on our activities. If I know we're seeing one of our business partners, I'm wearing khakis or slacks. If not, I'm probably wearing jeans. Either way, collared shirts are the norm with appropriate non-athletic shoes. I think this is a true win-win, and after just three days, people seem to be enjoying the new freedom.

Team activities can be another team-builder. We recently completed another Step Challenge. Teams of four competed to see who could amass the most steps over a six-week period. With randomly drawn teams, it provided the opportunity to interact with and to meet different employees. An added benefit is a more active and healthy lifestyle. Get off the couch and get some more steps!

These things have been successful in our workplace. What kinds of things work in your credit union that others might be able to implement?
