Bill Hampel

Credit Union National Association has promoted longtime credit union economist Bill Hampel to the position of chief policy officer. Hampel, who has served as the trade association's chief economist since 1985, most recently stepped up to the plate to serve as CUNA's acting CEO during the search for a permanent CEO following the departure of former CEO Bill Cheney.

With Jim Nussle now in place as CUNA's permanent CEO, Hampel will become the first to hold the position of chief policy officer, advising both Nussle and Chief of Staff Rich Meade on key strategic initiatives for the trade association.

"Every day I am impressed with the depth of knowledge and perspective Bill brings to the many opportunities and challenges we face," Nussle said. "His wise counsel has been a great value to me in my first weeks here at CUNA, and I look forward our work together in the years ahead. I am grateful that Bill has accepted this new challenge as chief policy officer, in addition to maintaining his valued role as chief economist."
