Get Involved: VITA Season is Ramping Up
Tuesday, December 1, 2015 6:25 AM

Every year, many credit unions participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), which allows them to offer free tax help to taxpayers who qualify (generally, those with incomes of $54,000 or less).

The program provides trained and certified community and credit union volunteers to help taxpayers with special tax credits and completion of their returns. More than 90,000 people said yes to making a difference during the 2015 filing season and prepared more than 3.7 million returns at thousands of VITA tax sites nationwide.

By participating in the VITA program, credit unions help lower-income consumers keep more of their EITC refunds in their own pockets. Credit unions can help their communities, including the elderly, and help connect more families to the benefits of credit union membership.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or starting a VITA program in your community, please contact Paula Upchurch, director of REAL Solutions at or 832-407-7965.
