Generations FCU Unveils 2016 Fiesta Medal
Tuesday, April 5, 2016 6:50 AM

All profits benefit Credit Unions for Kids and Children’s Hospital of San Antonio

Generations Federal Credit Union unveiled its 2016 Fiesta Medal just 14 days in advance of Fiesta San Antonio, the 125-year-old, 10-day, city-wide celebration that raises money for scholarships and nonprofit organizations across the city.

Generations FCU released its medal for sale to the general public on April 1, with all profits benefiting Credit Unions for Kids and the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. The credit union’s medals are on sale at all of its 14 branches.

“Medals are more than just a marketing tool because they really allow companies to show they understand and embrace what San Antonio is all about,” said Ashley Harris, vice president of marketing and corporate communications for Generations FCU. “At the same time, it allows us to live the credit union philosophy of charitable giving in our community.”

This is the third year Generations has offered a Fiesta medal. The credit union involved their entire staff in an employee-design contest, and the senior management team selected the finalist. The winner received a Fiesta medal sash, a GFCU Fiesta medal, and a $50 gift card.

The winner of the 2016 GFCU Fiesta Medal contest was Victoria Urrutia who works in the credit union’s Loan Servicing Department.

Fiesta San Antonio began in 1891 as a one-parade event, Battle of the Flowers, which honored the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto. The celebration has grown to feature more than 100 events and regularly welcomes more than 3.5 million attendees, infusing nearly $300 million in to the local economy.

Prior to general public sales, the credit union offered up a limited number of its 2016 medals to employees at a discounted rate. Those medals sold out in less than 15 minutes. Additionally, several of the GFCU branches already have a waitlist of individuals wanting to purchase medals.

“It’s not always easy for someone who lives outside of San Antonio to understand the Fiesta Medal process, but for those of us who do live here, it is a well-loved tradition,” said Harris. "We are pleased that we can participate, show the fun and vibrant side of our credit union, and at the same time give back to our community."
