Generations FCU Teller Helps Catch ID Thief
Friday, August 30, 2013 7:00 AM

Thanks to an alert teller, one identity thief is now behind bars. Using a fake ID, Nicole Lyons reportedly attempted to withdraw $800 from an elderly neighbor’s account at Generations FCU. Unfortunately for Lyons, the victim was a familiar face at the credit union, and teller Lynn Lee wasn’t going to let her get away with it.

According to Ashley M. Harris, associate vice president of corporate communications at Generations FCU, back in early August, a woman believed to be Lyons reportedly presented a fraudulent temporary ID to a Generations FCU employee at one of its other branches, and attempted to withdraw funds from a member’s account. The employee became suspicious and immediately alerted their supervisor; however, the suspect fled before police arrived.

Fortunately, the credit union had a copy of her ID and it was shared with all other branches.  Lyons apparently wasn’t going to give up that easy, as she attempted the scam again, and this time at the credit union’s Northwest branch. Credit union staff was able to stall her long enough for police to apprehend her.

An identity thief was also captured this week, at the credit union’s Yarrow branch. According to Harris, a different woman pulled into the drive-thru, and allegedly presented a fraudulent temporary ID. Credit union staff delayed the woman until the police arrived. A backpack full of stolen IDs, stolen checks and other fraudulent documents were allegedly found in the woman’s vehicle.

On Wednesday, WOAI-TV did a story on the credit union and its success in helping to catch Lyons.

Harris says the credit union is extremely proud of staff. Their alertness kept unsuspecting victims from experiencing financial loss.
