Generations FCU Named a Top Workplace Five Years Running
Wednesday, October 29, 2014 7:00 AM

For the fifth year in a row, Generations Federal Credit Union has been named as a Top Workplace in a San Antonio Express-News/Workplace Dynamics survey. Winners were chosen based on the results of confidential online surveys completed by the companies' employees on a variety of attributes such as confidence in management, direction of the company, feeling valued, and overall job satisfaction.

The award, currently in its sixth year, honors companies in the greater San Antonio area.  Companies were divided into three categories (large, medium, and small) based on the number of employees. More than 1,000 companies were invited to participate in the survey, with more than 600 companies in the medium-sized category alone. Generations ranked 9 among medium-sized companies (150 to 499 employees).

"Anyone can have a job, but we want our company to be a place where our staff looks forward to coming in every day and making a difference in the lives of our members," said Steve Schipull, president and CEO of Generations. "The senior leadership team at Generations works very hard to create an environment that is fun, challenging, and collaborative, so to be singled out by our staff for those very attributes is quite an honor."

Some of the things that set Generations apart include hosting events to remind employees how much they're appreciated. According to Generations Vice President of Corporate Communications Ashley Harris, "Managers have brought in lunch and breakfast for staff. One manager even brought in a grill and grilled hamburgers and hot dogs for employees." And, she said, for the credit union's 74th anniversary, it hired an ice cream truck to drive around to all of Generations' branches as a treat for staff.

"It's easy to say you appreciate staff and to have a recognition ceremony every now and then," Harris said. "But we understand that our staff is our most valuable asset, so we really try to go above and beyond. We work very hard, but we try to have a lot of fun along the way."

Generations is the fifth-largest credit union in San Antonio with more than 48,400 members and $506 million in assets. For nearly 75 years, Generations has been an advocate of financial growth and development within the community, offering award-winning financial education classes, as well as products and services.

The credit union has been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for innovative, award-winning services that reach out to everyone in the community as they work toward their financial goals. In March 2013, the credit union was named as one of the top credit union youth financial education programs in the country with the recipient of the National Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award.
