Generations FCU Collaborates with San Antonio College to Provide Financial Ed to Teens
Friday, June 28, 2013 5:50 AM

More than 30 Upward Bound students from Lanier and Fox Tech High School in San Antonio have been receiving financial education classes as part of a partnership program between Generations Federal Credit Union and San Antonio College.  This is the third year that David Rodriguez, financial education advocate for Generations FCU, has been teaching the classes.

During the week-long financial education series, the students learn about banking services, finances and earning money.  Rodriguez gets the students up and moving around through fun and engaging exercises that convey the importance of taking control of their financial lives at a young age. Generations FCU also teaches the students interview skills and general workplace etiquette.

The programs and activities of Upward Bound are designed for students who are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, as well as other disconnected students.  Research indicates that only 34 percent of parents have taught their children how to balance a checkbook, and 81 percent of college students have underestimated (by a large margin) how long it will take to repay credit cards and other debt.
