GECU Responds to Action Alert, Surpassing Contact Campaign Goal
Wednesday, February 8, 2017 7:00 AM

When GECU was asked to take action in response to a Cornerstone Credit Union League Action Alert that went out last week, their goal was to get 80 percent of their staff to email their lawmakers. That would have meant that more than 600 employees would take action. According to reports, GECU employees blew that goal out of the water! They had more than 650 employees respond.

Below is the email that GECU CEO Crystal Long sent to employees to ask them to engage.

Dear True Blue,

We need your help! Cornerstone Credit Union League is urging us to take action in support of regulatory relief for credit unions. Please read the action alert below and click on “Take Action” to send an email to Congress asking for their support. The email includes talking points for your use – you simply need to fill out your information at the bottom.

**Make sure to use your GECU email address for tracking purposes.  If your home zip code doesn’t register, please use the Operations Center address instead (1225 Airway Blvd 79925).

If we receive 80% employee participation by the end of day tomorrow, Tuesday, January 31, all employees will be allowed to wear jeans this Thursday as a token of my appreciation!  Keep an eye out for an email from HR with the results.

In order for credit unions to survive and thrive in the face of increased regulatory and legislative pressures, we must make our voice heard.

After Cornerstone Political and Grassroots Director April Krause provided GECU with their final action numbers, Long sent a follow-up email announcing they'd hit their goal:

Get out your most comfortable pair of jeans and tennis shoes for tomorrow!  In just one day you hit the goal and made your voices heard!  Nothing is more powerful to elected officials than when they hear from their constituents. Your voice, as a credit union member and employee, is more effective than any lobbyist.

Thanks to each and every one of you for elevating the credit union voice!

“It’s very exciting to see a credit union activate staff like GECU did," Krause said. "Their employees where excited about this change, and they proved it. Crystal knows the important role that advocacy plays in credit unions, and she instills it into her employees.”
