Galveston Chapter CUs Volunteer at Local Orgs to Honor ICU Week
Thursday, October 16, 2014 6:50 AM

Credit Union Sense, Galveston County's chapter of local credit unions, continuously provides local service to nonprofit organizations and their communities throughout the year. This year, in honor of International Credit Union Day, the chapter decided to celebrate with volunteerism at various Galveston County organizations during the entire week of Oct. 13. That means every region in Galveston County will be serviced by almost every local credit union.

This dynamic chapter has set the bar high. Throughout this past year, multiple credit unions made a lasting impression in their communities. Here are a few stories to highlight their community impact:

AMOCO Federal Credit Union partnered with Hope Village and Independence Village to provide a magical holiday party for their residents. AMOCO provided breakfast and presents, and even Santa made an appearance to pull off the perfect party. Hope Village and Independence Village are assisted living quarters for people with mental and developmental disabilities.

Associated Credit Union of Texas teamed up with Bay Area Habitat for Humanity to restore a home for a single mother and her daughter. ACU of Texas employees gladly took a morning out of the office to help put the finishing touches on a home in La Porte, Texas. Bay Area Habitat for Humanity is the only nonprofit homebuilder in the Galveston, Southeast Harris, and Northern Brazoria counties.

Beacon Federal Credit Union worked with the Boys and Girls Harbor to provide the kids with a special summer day filled with fun activities and a picnic lunch. The kids enjoyed hot dogs, chips, beverages, and ice cream. The entire day was made possible by generous donations from Beacon Federal Credit Union. Boys and Girls Harbor provides residential care for at-risk children in the community.

Coastal Community Federal Credit Union volunteered at one of the biggest Galveston County events, the Battle of the Badges. This event is held annually, and every year Coastal Community Federal Credit Union works hard to make it a success. Battle of the Badges is a boxing match between a mix of police, fire, and city departments. All proceeds go the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs.

Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union helped their community with a financial contribution to the Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities at University of Houston Clear Lake. The funds were raised by the Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union employees, and the credit union matched the contributions. The Center of Autism works directly with students diagnosed with autism and their families.

These are but a few examples of the "people helping people" philosophy that Credit Union Sense has endeavored to promote throughout the year. During International Credit Union "week," Credit Union Sense will be making a remarkable impact throughout the Galveston County. From sponsorships to volunteers, Credit Union Sense provides the extra T.L.C organizations need year-round.
