As part of the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference, 32 Houston credit union leaders visited freshman Democratic Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (District 7) yesterday. So many advocates came to visit, they couldn't all fit in her office, so the meeting took place in the hallway.

Advocates raised the current priority issues with Fletcher and helped educate her about the credit union difference, including the tax status; shutdown assistance for furloughed government workers; cybersecurity, privacy, and data breach legislation; the CFPB's ability to exempt credit unions from regulations designed for problem actors like banks; complications with CECL; and the potential for credit unions to be placed under the jurisdiction of the Community Reinvestment Act—as bankers have been advocating.

Fletcher is new to concerns facing credit unions, though she was familiar with some matters. Being conversant on the issues is important to her, Fletcher said, and she thanked credit unions for visiting to help her learn about credit unions and their priorities.

Fletcher defeated nine-term Republican incumbent John Culberson in November. She serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
