The Fort Worth Chapter of Credit Unions held their 27th annual Elementary School Christmas Carnivals on Dec. 6 and Dec. 12. Using donations from chapter credit unions, vendors, and preferred partners, they were able to provide goody bags with snacks, toys, crayons, and educational coloring books, and even toothbrushes for approximately 1,300 children at two elementary schools within the community of Fort Worth.

The Chapter also provided a photo button of the children’s special moment with Santa, as well as a day of face painting, games, and entertainment. Donations of coats were also made to these underserved schools where approximately 90 percent of the children receive free or reduced lunches.

These parties cost upwards of $12,000 and require the help of many volunteers, but participants say it's well worth the cost and time to see the eyes of the children light up with joy. Both schools were extremely grateful, and many of the children and staff took the time to write thank you notes to the volunteers. For many of the children, this event is the only Christmas celebration they will experience this year. Credit union organizers say it's a very humbling experience, and that they look forward to doing it every year.
