According to a recent Pertino survey of more than 1,000 U.S. employees, 36 percent of Americans are working at least once a day while on vacation. A similar study released this summer also finds that more than half of Americans plan to work while on vacation, and 83 percent report that having to work while on vacation is becoming more common. Although disconnecting from work while on vacation can be challenging, Doris Small, manager at Fort Smith Teachers FCU, says it’s important to do so.
“You have to have down time. Enjoy time away from the office to be with your family,” notes Small. “Otherwise, you’ll get burned out.”
With just over $10.4 million in assets, Fort Smith Teachers FCU has a membership of about 1,700. In addition to loans, the credit union offers basic checking and savings, and serves educators and employees of the local public school district, as well as the university. The credit union does not have an online presence, so Small says branch traffic tends to be heavy – particularly during the summer months and holidays when school is not in session.
Working alongside Small at the credit union are two full-time employees. Because there are only three of them, Small says cross training is essential.
“We all know how to perform the day-to-day duties and responsibilities,” adds Small. “And when one of us is out of the office, we feel it.”
Nonetheless, Small says she encourages her staff to use the vacation hours they’ve earned.
“When you have the opportunity to take a break from your job, you return energized and ready to serve your members,” adds Small.
