Foran High School Hosts Cosden FCU for CU4 Reality Fairs

Cosden Federal Credit Union has been hosting CU4 Reality Fairs this year, with the goal of increasing financial literacy and giving youths a leg-up as they move forward into young adulthood and independent living.

Forsan High School's CU4 Reality Fair took place May 3 in the Forsan gymnasium. The reality fair concept is a unique opportunity for students to experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they start life on their own. Students identify their career choices and starting salaries, then complete a budget sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary to pay for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. Additional expenses such as entertainment and travel are factored in as well.

Cosden FCU's CEO Laurie Barraza worked with the Forsan High School Counselor Angela Huckabee to create personalized budgets for each student based on their career choices. Each student was given a binder with their annual and monthly budgets and then were given the opportunity to mock purchase everything from a home, vehicle, and insurance, down to the basic, everyday needs such as food.

Throughout the fair, students face many temptations for additional spending, and they must learn to balance their wants and needs to live on their own. After the students have visited the various booths covering components of independent living, students then balance their budgets and sit down with a financial counselor for review.

The goal of the fair is to teach high school students the value of accurately budgeting, as well as to teach them about some of the hidden costs.

“We saw a need for high school students to learn about properly budgeting as well as developing their ability to communicate effectively in a business and professional environment,” Barraza said of the CU 4 Reality program.
