Tuesday, August 27, 2013 6:50 AM

The Cornerstone Credit Union League has awarded FivePoint CU a first place award in the Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award Program, asset category $150-$500 million, for its efforts to improve the quality of life of its members and community through financial education.

From July 2012 to July 2013, the credit union partnered with five nonprofit organizations within the three counties of Jefferson, Hardin and Orange to teach and provide financial education to adults. FivePoint CU was able to reach 266 adults directly with 18 financial education sessions and 20 financial counseling sessions.

In partnering with organizations such as Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas, Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Greater Dallas, the United Way of Mid and South Jefferson County, the Southeast Texas Alliance of Economic Inclusion and Covenant Community Capital, the credit union has been able to bring financial education to adults of all ages across Southeast Texas both in person and through webinars.

The credit union teaches on a variety of topics such as budgeting, saving, investing, credit and more. The credit union also provides financial education to their new employees during their new employee orientation.

“Financial literacy is an important objective for FivePoint and by providing financial education and financial counseling to the adults in our area we are giving them essential tools to succeed in their financial lives now and in the future,” says Mandy Clayton, CUDE, director of financial education and Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor with FivePoint CU.

The credit union’s Desjardins entry has now advanced to the national competition.
