Firstmark CU Sells Fiesta Medals for CUs for Kids

Fiesta Medals

This year Firstmark Credit Union designed and produced two medals for San Antonio's annual Fiesta celebration. While one medal promoted Firstmark and was given away for free, the other was designed as a fundraising piece for Credit Unions for Kids, which benefits the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. The cost for each medal was $5.00.

During Fiesta, which runs from April 16-26, various unique Fiesta medals are heavily traded, bought, and sold throughout the city. In fewer than three days of promotion Firstmark branches and via social media, the 250 medals they had ordered were sold out. After expenses, Firstmark raised $550 that will be donated to the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

"There is no greater feeling than working for an organization that not only integrates its corporate responsibility to our community into its core mission, but that lives that mission every day by participating in such a worthy cause—raising money for sick kids in need," said Firstmark Credit Union President/CEO Leon Ewing. "It is an extraordinary experience for me personally to know that my contributions to the Children's Hospital of San Antonio make such a huge difference in the lives of children and their families."

Since 1986, Firstmark has donated more than $900,000 to the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio through Credit Unions for Kids.

“We are grateful to have such wonderful partners like Firstmark Credit Union. They continue to think of fun and exciting ways to raise critically needed funds for the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.” John E. Bel, president, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation.”

In 2015 the credit union raised close to $1,300 in pledges during the citywide Credit Unions for Kids Bowl-a-Thon, which they participate in every year.

They also held their first Credit Unions for Kids Lunch & Learn in early April for employees. The goal was to share information about Credit Unions for Kids program and the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and to invite employees to support the charity through a payroll deduction.

Fiesta MedalsSpeakers for the Lunch & Learn included Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation President John E. Bel and Vice President and Chief Development Officer Christus Santa Rosa; Children's Miracle Network Director of Annual Giving Gracie Martinez; and Children's Hospital of San Antonio, Cystic Fibrosis Division, Rebecca Pena, CPNP.

During the event, two employees of the credit union gave testimonials from their first-hand experience with the hospital. This seemed to provide the biggest “a-ha” moment. The event generated an additional $1,300 a year through payroll deduction.

The credit union's financial operations department held a breakfast taco sale in February and raised $420; and more recently, the Member Contact Center held a lunch taco plate sale and sold raffle tickets for a Fiesta wreath, which raised nearly $870.

Firstmark sells hospital teddy bears during different holidays or special occasions throughout the year. They sold 175 bears at $10 each in one week for this last Valentine’s Day. People could choose to purchase a bear to keep or purchase a bear to donate to a child patient at the Children’s Hospital. From their Valentine's sale, the credit union received 22 bears to donate.

Firstmark also offered the design to other credit unions in San Antonio that support Credit Unions for Kids. Air Force Federal Credit Union took them up on it and ordered 200. Next year, Firstmark plans to order double the quantity of medals and to enter it into a citywide medal contest to give them even more exposure.
