Firstmark CU Hosts Meeting with Congressman Pete Gallego
Wednesday, October 2, 2013 6:45 AM

Pete Gallego

Firstmark CU took advantage of the summer recess by hosting a meeting with Congressman Pete Gallego from the 23rd Congressional District. During the meeting, Leon Ewing, president/CEO of Firstmark CU, spoke of the concerns over tax reform, as well as the increased regulatory burdens being placed on credit unions.

Congressman Gallego's staunch support of credit unions stems from his childhood. During the meeting, he related the story of how his father, Pete Gallego, Jr., instilled the value of credit unions not only in his family, but in his community. According to Congressman Gallego, the local Catholic priest had gathered a group of parishioners to establish a small credit union, and he asked Gallego, Jr. to be its first treasurer. The newly formed credit union was called Our Lady of Peace CU (now Alpine Community Credit Union). For years, Pete Gallego, Jr. operated the credit union each evening from the dining room table of his home so people could borrow money or make payments after they got off work.

Congressman Gallego has long advocated for common sense solutions to address the nation’s biggest issues. As Congress looks at the complexities of tax reform, Congressman Gallego says he will continue to fight to protect credit unions and its members.
