First Light FCU Meets Rep. O'Rourke

In an effort to beef up its involvement in advocacy, FirstLight Federal Credit Union held a meet-and-greet for its board members and invited Congressman Robert "Beto" O'Rourke (D-TX, District 16) to join them.

Fourteen people attended the meeting. CU leaders gave O'Rourke a tour of their call center and then met with him about the credit union's community efforts and gave feedback on legislative matters, including merchant data breaches, the CFPB exemption for credit unions, payday lending alternatives, financial education, down-payment assistance, and the development of a foundation.

"The impact of the Dodd-Frank Act, in general, has caused burdensome impacts on credit unions and their members," FirstLight FCU CEO Karl Murphy said. "FirstLight Federal Credit Union expressed concern about credit unions paying the cost of merchant breaches. Most recently, CFPB’s mortgage rule has been most onerous and costly, and Congressional action on exemption for credit unions is imperative."

Murphy noted that everyone who attended felt the meeting went very well; that there was a good exchange of information and a commitment to keep the lines of communication open.
