First Community Credit Union Awards Six College Scholarships
Wednesday, May 22, 2013 6:20 AM

For the 29th year, First Community Credit Union (Houston) has awarded scholarships to deserving members who are graduating seniors from high school or undergraduates currently enrolled in college.

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, the student’s essay, volunteer work and extracurricular activities, and GPA/class rank/test scores. Each of the six students will receive a total award of $3,000 to assist with college tuition.

“This successful scholarship program is designed to help students who are driven to further their education,” President and CEO Ron Downing said. “FCCU is proud and honored to be a part of these students’ journeys in achieving their career goals.”

This year’s recipients are:

  • Samuel Hueter, who will attend The University of Texas
  • Lucia Meras-Torres, who will attend Sam Houston State University
  • Vanessa Rathway, who plans to attend the University of Oklahoma
  • Kimberly Ekholm, who is currently attending Missouri University of Science and Technology
  • William Veenstra, who is currently attending The University of Texas
  • Bonnie Cantwell, who is currently attending Baylor University

FCCU, which started out as a credit union for teachers and has been an avid supporter of education for over 59 years, remains deeply rooted in many of the school districts in the Houston area and makes education a priority.
